通史编撰既是中国政治思想史研究的基础工作，也是中国政治思想史研究的重要组成部分，但通史之编撰并非仅仅是将思想的历史事实摆放在博物架上，而是要追求理解的贯通性和呈现的整体性，其学术使命在于从文化传承与知识创新的角度描述、批判和继承中国优秀政治理论资源，继往开来，推陈出新。因此，中国政治思想通史编撰的核心在于一个“通”字，一是要以尽可能完整的政治知识，追求中国政治思想通史编撰的理论上的“通”，在这方面，《中国政治思想通史》所体现的“王权主义学派”作出了积极的努力，也取得了较大的成绩；二是要关注不同历史阶段的时代思潮在概念、问题、思维方式及具体观点等方面的连通性，从历史的长时段来理解中国政治思想的宏观整体发展；三是要关注同一个时代不同思想流派之间在概念、话语、问题、观点等方面的相同、相通和互补，从时代的整体性来理解不同流派思想之间的根本共性。三方面的贯通性理解共同支撑起一个关于中国政治思想的理论上的整体性呈现。

The compilation of a general history not only prepares the ground for the research on the historyof Chinese political thoughts but constitutes an important part of it as well. However，the general history doesnot mean presenting the historical facts in the way of arranging museum items，but rather pursues a coherentunderstanding and an overall presentation of the history of Chinese political thoughts. The mission of compilingsuch a history is to critically describe，analyze and inherit the theoretical resources of Chinese politicalthoughts from the perspectives of cultural inheritance and knowledge innovation. Therefore，the success of thecompilation lies in the key word“ general” . Firstly，the word“ general” requires that the compilation be underthe guidance of a consistent theory of political thoughts. In this regard，the theory of monarchism embodiedin A General History of Chinese Political Thoughts is a good case in point. Secondly，it means that there shouldbe sufficient consistency between different historical periods in such aspects as the notions，issues，modes ofthinking and specific ideas concerning political thoughts. It is necessary to build a macro picture of the overalldevelopment of Chinese political thoughts. Thirdly，the word“ general” also means that sufficient attentionshould be paid to the commonalities and complementarities between different schools of thoughts at the sameperiod concerning notions，discourses，issues，and specific ideas of political thoughts. That is，the commonalitybetween different schools of thoughts should be viewed from the perspective of the wholeness of the times. Thegenerality embodied in the three aspects mentioned above guarantees an overall picture in the theory of Chinesepolitical thoughts.
