The overseas performance of Cha guan茶馆(Tea House)has been a grand event in the history of China’s cultural exchange with foreign countries since the founding of new China. This is very significant to the establishment of Cha guan as a modern classic. The fantastic effect on the audience exerted by the successful overseas performance of this great play is due to its tragic appeal, its pursuit of universal human values shared by all classes, times and regions, and its vivid epic display of China’s social life in the first half of the 20th century. The success is also attributable to its artistic modernity and eastern charm and its adaptation to the expectation of foreign audiences. The successful cross-cultural performance of Cha guan and the cultural exchanges it has promoted constitute a good example for the Sino-foreign dialogue concerning theatre on an equal footing, which have exerted some positive effects on the foreign plays. All this is sure to have a lasting effect on the writing of the history of contemporary theatre and the construction of theatrical aesthetics.
