Title:: Discursive Construction of Gender Identity in the Post-modern Context

Abstract:: In contrast with essentialist approaches to gender identity which emphasize the binary oppositionbased on the genetically determined biological distinction，constructivist approaches regard gender identityas socially constructed in the process of linguistic interaction. In the post-modern context，gender identity isdiscursively constructed through lexicogrammatical choices in the linguistic system and in so doing discourseproduces and reproduces unequal gender relations and sexist ideologies in one way or another. Through thecritical analysis of everyday discourse，this study aims to reveal the existent gender bias and gender inequalityin discourse and expose the hidden sexist ideologies underlying gendered discourse，with a view to eliminatinggender discrimination from its root.
