- Abstract:
- The school of classical poetry in modern China was such a poet community that straddled the oldpoetry and the new one. People belonging to this school had their own vision of new poetry, which was deeplyinfluenced by the traditional notion of wen 文. They attempted to build a general form for new poetry accordingto the stylistic principle of requiring poems to meet the prosodic patterns based on the syllable. Taking theancient literature as the criteria, they severely criticized the new vernacular poetry. On this basis, they formedtheir outlook on poetry which was deeply rooted in traditional Chinese culture and can even be regarded assort of poetic xenophobia. The tradition of wen was actually a double-edged sword, which opened the doorand window leading to the tradition but at the same time blocked the road to the future. In this sense, theconstruction of new poetry needs a new synthesis of inheritance and transcendence of the tradition.
