摘要:
五四爱国运动前夕,美国实用主义哲学家、教育家杜威作为新知识界的嘉宾被隆重邀请到中国,开始了影响深远的两年访华之行。杜威所宣传的实用主义学说,因内容精深、适合所需、易于接受而成为流行于五四时期思想文化界的一股热潮。南京高等师范学校作为负责邀请的三大教育机构之一,因郭秉文、陶行知等学人在哥伦比亚大学师范学院与杜威的师承关系,他们参与邀请、广为宣传、积极筹资、译述陪伴,可谓出力颇多,使杜威的访华之行卓有成效。反之,杜威以南京高师为南方重要活动基地,通过参观考察、讲演问答、系统授课等方式为南京高师成为东南学术重镇添砖助力;如从长远来看,更是深度传播了实用主义,广泛联系了欧美学者,有效推进了国际交流,为南京高师以至东南大学成为最具规模的现代化大学贡献频多。
Abstract:
On the eve of the May Fourth Patriotic Movement, John Dewey, the American pragmatist philosopher and educator, was invited to visit China as a distinguished guest by the new intellectuals and began a two-year trip in China which left far-reaching impact. Dewey’s theory of pragmatism became popular in the ideological and cultural circles during the May Fourth Movement because it was profound in content, suitable for our needs and easy to be accepted. Nanjing Teachers College was one of the three major educational institutes responsible for the invitation, for among others its president Kuo Pingwen and its faculty member Tao Xingzhi had been under the supervision of Dewey at the Teachers College of Columbia University. They participated in inviting their American mentor to visit China, widely publicizing the event, actively raising funds, translating Dewey’s works and accompanying him to make inspection tours over China. All this made Dewey’s visit to China fruitful. As a return to Chinese scholars’ hospitality, Dewey took Nanjing Teachers College as an important base in the South and helped the college to become an important academic capital in southeast China through investigation, lecture, question and answer, and teaching courses. The long-term influence is that Dewey spread pragmatism in depth, contacted European and American scholars extensively, and effectively promoted international exchanges. He had also contributed a lot to promoting Nanjing Teachers College and the later Southeast University to become a modern university.
