Abstract:
As an important predictor of individual educational attainment, educational expectations andaspirations are of great significance for an individual’s development and the quality of overall nationalpopulation, which have attracted many researchers’ attention. Previous studies mainly focused on the role ofparents’ educational expectations and aspirations on their children and the role of children’s own educationalexpectations and aspirations in improving cheir development. However, inadequate attention has been givento the discrepancies between parents’ and their educational expectations and aspirations ( i.e. parent-childdiscrepancies in educational expectations and aspirations ). Therefore, this study analyzes the multi-disciplinarytheoretical and empirical studies in this field, putting forward the conceptual framework of parent-childdiscrepancies in educational expectations and aspirations, elaborating the findings on the relations betweenparent-child discrepancies in educational expectations and aspirations and an individual’s development, and exploring the factors that may influence the parent-child discrepancies in educational expectations andaspirations. Furthermore, this study points out the future directions for the studies on parent-child discrepanciesin educational expectations and aspirations.
