Abstract:
There are two types of mechanism for the generation of the five-character poems: one is that the poems were collected by the later generations from the historical documents and presented them in the form of series of related poems, and the second is that the form of the five-character poems were originally produced by the poets under the internal and external factors of literary creation. In different documents, there are situations where poems are combined, split, and changed to form series of poems. At the beginning, the appearance of the series of five-character poems as a poetic genre may be influenced by other literary forms such as jiuti(nine-character style), qiti(seven-character style), and the music composing approach, and by the fact that the themes of the early poetry remained undifferentiated or unspecified as well. However, besides the accidental influences, it is certain that such kind of poems emerged against a background where poem composers were exploring ways to enrich and deepen the content of the poems, and the form of a series of five-character poems showed more advantages than the form of a long four-character or five-character poem presented as an independent piece. The five-character series of poems in that period tended to concentrate on the thematic scope of expressing the poet's personal feelings, showing gratitude, responding to the poems produced by other fellow poets, mimicking the ancient composing style, and expressing views on the past, etc. Though different in the development process, such poems showed a trend of mutual integration in thematic choice.
