Title:: The Evolution and Historical Contribution of Jiangsu's Journalism in Modern China

Abstract:: In modern China, the journalism in Jiangsu Province was unique in its development. A review of its history reveals that it underwent the following major stages successively: the initial period where the journalism played an important role in enlightening and educating people; the period where it witnessed its rising prosperity in improving the atmosphere for public opinion and in mobilizing support for social development; the period where it sounded the call for saving the Chinese nation against twists and turns; and the period where it became the banner of revolution after substantial adjustment. The whole process was characterized by a curvilinear trajectory and a pattern of diversification and multidimensionality. The development of journalism in Jiangsu brought a vibrant modern culture to this region and made important contributions in such areas as passing on the fine tradition of making contribution to the society, setting up the force for publicizing the ideas of revolution, manifesting the role played by the public opinion in supporting the nation, and promoting the concept that the Party should run newspapers at different levels and in various forms.
