Title:: Nanjing Normal University over the Past 120 Years: An Open Book of Educational Humanism

Abstract:: The development of a university's academic disciplines depends not only on its external appearance but also on its internal spirit. The internal spirit is key to the formation of a school in a discipline, and it is also the cultural inheritance of the discipline. In the development of the education discipline of Nanjing Normal University, a group of educators have emerged: for example, Tao Xingzhi, Chen Heqin, Wu Yifang, Lu Jie, and Zhu Xiaoman. They put forward and developed their own educational thoughts on the fertile land of Nanjing Normal University: Tao Xingzhi's theory of life education, Chen Heqin's theory of living education, Wu Yifang's theory of education for public welfare, Lu Jie's theory of educational humanism, and Zhu Xiaoman's theory of emotional education all point to the educational pursuit of helping students become a true human being. All this has made the educational theories developed in Nanjing Normal University over the past 120 years form a distinct feature of educational humanism. They are like an opening book leading future generations to move forward in the direction of fostering virtue and nurturing talents.
