Abstract:
To some extent, the old age means a transfer and reform of self-role. The process of growing old isnot only a process of losing control of the body gradually, but also a process of shifting the existing social circleto a new one. Therefore, health and social interactions are two major topics in studying the problems facingthe old people. Recently, social platforms for the elderly have gradually transferred to new media, showing amarked increase in their application. When faced with the mixed information on the Internet, the elderly aretrapped in the dilemma of the new media, hence a group of new-media“ refugees”, who are reduced to thevictims of the disaster of false information. This study attempts to take Wechat as an example to explore thecharacteristics of the elderly’s contact with and judgement of health information on this platform, so as to helpthem benefit from social media. The results show that the elderly focus their use of the new media on theirinteraction with acquaintances, whose access to and judgement of the online information highly rely on thesocial network; their heavy dependence on the communication of health information on the Wechat platformamong the elderly is easy to cause involution in their cognition; and their digital media literacy is severely weak, which requires urgent customized information intervention.
