Abstract:
Though there is little dispute over the historical significance of modern Chinese revolutionaryliterature and the historical position of Yu Dafu as a May 4th writer, the previous studies mostly focusedon such aspects of this great modern Chinese writer as his rich emotional world, unrestrained lifestyle, andhis status as a modern scholar, a revolutionary writer, a romantic writer, and a novelist who was good atdepicting human feelings. There is a lack of a panoramic view on Yu and his works by putting them into thewhole picture of revolutionary literature. Therefore, when we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the May 4thMovement, it is necessary for us to revisit Yu Dafu as a complete man and all his works in order to trace theevolution of novel writings since the May 4th Movement in general and in particular to re-read the worksfocusing on describing the social realities produced by those writers who have been given less attention. This will not only bring us new understanding of Yu Dafu but also help us gain new knowledge of modernChinese revolutionary literature generated by the May 4th Movement. Under the pen of Yu Dafu, the realisticrevolutionary literature in modern China does not only depict the social realities in the outside world, butpaints a faithful picture of the novelist’s inner world realities as well; the fictional stories reflect the writer’sview on the development of the times and social realities. In addition to that, Yu Dafu joined the left-wingliterature movement and anti-Japanese war with practical discourse as his weapon. In this sense, his lifeformed a great epic and made a difference in the world of modern Chinese revolutionary literature.
