- The campaign to collect ge yao 歌谣（ literally ballad） nationwide launched by Peking Universityin 1918 took place in the wake of May Fourth Movement. This campaign is of great significance and valuein Chinese academic history. Mainly based on the weekly magazine entitled Ge yao and other historicaldocuments，this paper made a systematic examination of the process of ge yao collection，which was dividedinto four stages. The issues concerning the solicitation，classification and studies of ge yao at each stage alsoreceived an in-depth discussion. On this basis，the achievements made by the campaign were evaluated and theexperience，positive or negative，also reviewed.
