Abstract:
With the help of writing, the leftist Lu Xun had answered the following two questions: “with whom I should stand together” and “with whom I should go toward the future”. These two issues are closely related to an individual’s choice of social position and identity. As to the former, Lu Xun argued, it is the aspiration for change that links the individual maker of representation with the masses as the receiver of representation or as the represented objects. What is more, both sides are equal to each other: a maker of representation, who has obtained the power and place to voice his representation, should regard as his peers the represented objects who are always in the adverse conditions for making representation. As to the latter question, Lu Xun identified with idiots, fools and the proletariat, for he bore the same social ideals as people of this kind. In Lu Xun’s writings, what these people share is not their social and moral positions but their resolution to act under the push from their inner will and the fact that their words are consistent with their actions.
