Abstract:
Zuiweng tanlu醉翁谈录 (Collected Talks of a Drunkard), which has traditionally been regarded as a monograph on ancient art of storytelling, is thought to describe the extraordinary skills of the story tellers in the Song and Yuan dynasties and contain a lot of scripts used by those story tellers. Our examination of the origins and the evolutions of such notions as huaben话本 (storyteller’s script), shegeng舌耕(cultivation with tongue) and shuoshu说书(talk about books) as well as the style of the novels included therein falsifies the traditional categorization of the book. Rather than about the art of oral storytelling, the section of Shegeng xuyin舌耕叙引(introduction to cultivation with tongue) in Zuiweng tanlu is just a description of the thriving creation activities of the then novelists and the works included in the book are all the novels intended for reading instead of the scripts of oral storytelling.
