- In this paper, we systematically review the creation of Buddhist novels and relevant theoretical studies on such novels during the period of the Republic of China by dividing the development of the Buddhist novels into three periods: initial(1911—1928); intermediate(1928—1937); and final(1938—1949). We also give a diachronic survey to the relatively inadequate theoretical studies on Buddhist novels and analyze the reason why there was such a big discrepancy between the creation of Buddhist novels and the theoretical studies on them. All this is intended to explore a new area for the studies on the history of modern literature.
