Abstract:
As to the social function of literature, there are two kinds of poetry in classical Chinese literature: Shiyuanqing 诗缘情(poetry expressing emotions)and Shiyanzhi 诗言志(poetry expressing lofty aspirations). The latter, from which our narrative tradition originated, endows literature with the mission to convey truth and introduces narrative of justice into classical Chinese literature, revealing our pursuit of justice. Justice narrative shows distinctive national characteristics. Under the influence of Shiyuanqing, it is closely connected with poetic justice. Due to Confucian ritual theory, the function of moralization is greatly emphasized in classical Chinese literature. Hence, what is behind justice narrative is the construction of our internal ethical order. Also, justice narrative reflects our unique aesthetic taste and cultural context. Chinese yin-yang theory is kind of similar to modern narrative theory originating from structuralism. Interpreting justice narrative is of methodological significance for understanding our philosophy and theory of literary narrative.
