Abstract:
Qing Yi Bao清议报 played a significant role in the development of poetry published on newspapers and magazines in the late Qing Dynasty not only because it was one of the influential newspapers at that time but because its editor Liang Qichao had his own column on the paper in order to put his theory of poetic revolution into practice. Among Qing Yi Bao poets, Liang Dingfen, Kang Youwei, and Jiang Zhiyou were the key figures not only because they were most productive but also because their works best reflected their thoughts of poetic revolutions. The evolution in their poetic ideas also shows how literati in that period changed their ideas according to the changes of the times. Kang Youwei’s mirror his experience and feelings of the days when he relentlessly rallied support for Chinese monarchy abroad; Jiang Zhiyou’s best show his ideas on poetic revolutions and the development of his poetic thoughts constitutes a precious approach to the mentality of men of letters at that time. Thus, it is safe to say that Qiang Yi Bao poetry initiated the development of poetry published on newspapers and magazines in the late Qing period.
