Abstract:: Lu Xun’s Yecao野草(literally Weeds)constitutes a rich mine of information about its author. Although previous studies have offered many interpretations of the prose collection from different angles, few of them observed this masterpiece from the perspective of its author’s experience of the urban life in Beijing, which is actually closely related to his motivation for producing this collection. From some pieces in the collection, we can see Lu Xun’s reflection on the dark side of the urban life from the angle of a Benjamin’s flaneur, his revelation of the uneasy interpersonal relationship, and his criticism of the worship of materialistic pursuits. From other pieces that focus on people’s spiritual world, we can see his modern and western-styled account of the internal driving force for the development of cities.
