Abstract:: The third generation Chinese film directors adhered to the film ideals and artistic mission due to the needs and constraints of the political era. But because of the interference of leftist political movements, they gradually formed a passive mentality of “not seeking art actively, but staying correct politically”. This ideology exerted a negative impact on their works. However, the third generation film directors still made a lot of artistic creations showing the great features of the times in terms of the lens using, picture composition, montage art, the movie’s popularization, nationalization and other aspects. In addition, the relationship between the third generation director’s artistic creation and Chinese film tradition needs our thorough examination.
