- Abstract:
- According to Confucius, friendship is a type of pan-social interpersonal relationship. Though different from the relationship based on the clan system, friendship exerts a heavy influence on a person’s life. In this sense, Confucius advocated choosing good men to be friends, whose qualities in morality and wisdom make two key criteria for making friends. The essence of Confucius’s idea of friendship ethics is the duty of mutual help and the pursuit of high morality. This reflects the humanitarian principle of “virtuous men love their fellows” and an orientation towards practicing fraternity and equality. This idea of Confucius is still of great significance today, which provides a solid basis for constructing harmonious interpersonal relationship.
