- Abstract:
- The paper focuses on two issues concerning the impact of French factors on the education of theNationalist Government in Nanjing. Firstly,in the discussion on the reasons for the termination of“ UniversityDistrict” System, the perspectives receiving less attention previously are discussed here. The goal orientationof the centralized educational system in the design of“ University District” from France, which was at greatodds with the objective( i.e.,independent education and academic freedom) proposed by Mr. Cai Yuanpei, was intentionally weakened. The second factor made it difficult for China to follow French practice wasthat China differed from France in the scale of“ University District” . However, the famous French physicistPaul Langevin, who was the only scientist among the four members of educational delegation dispatched bythe League of Nations in 1931,did exert some influence on China’s scientific education in the 1930s. Forexample,he helped raise the proportion of scientific education in middle schools, promoted the localization oftextbooks at schools, and gave an impetus to the founding of the Chinese Physical Society.
