- Abstract:
- Li Nianci was a poet in the region of Guanzhong in the early Qing Dynasty. His poetic thoughts did not only follow the traditional Chinese theory of poetry, especially the notions concerning poetic creation (e.g., embodiment of emotions and wishes; promotion of lofty ideas and principles; nurture and inspiration from nature; greatness as a consequence of personal sufferings), but added new contents to these traditional notions through connecting them with the literary practice in the early Qing Dynasty, thus showing a distinct spirit of the time. He emphasized both the personal quality of the poets as well as the social function and cognitive value of literature, which speaks of his positive view on life. Characterized by its inclusiveness and systematicness, Lis poetic theory occupies a unique and significant place in Chinese literary history.
