- Abstract:
- Through intensive allusions to literary tradition in her novels, Virginia Woolf turns her novel writings into a new space for expressing her views on history and literature. The Voyage Out, a novel presenting Woolf’s inquiries about and revision of literary heritage in her early writing stage, possesses extraordinary significance for the examination of the development of her literary outlook. In the novel, Woolf not only expresses her own hopes and dreams through telling the growth stories of the heroine who is of the same age as herself, but also holds a dialogue with the literary tradition. Therefore, the analysis of the interaction between the literary tradition and the Woolf’s feminist idea is key to due understanding of how she opposes the patriarchal-centered literary tradition. On the one hand, Woolf expresses her uncompromising standpoints through her critical reading of the literary tradition, and on the other, she reconstructs traditional courtship narrative through the revision of the heroine’s destiny.
