Abstract:
The pursuit of writing poems( including ci poems) on the themes with great social and historicalsignificance embodies the tradition of Chinese Confucian scholars’ writing on hardships in life. In his poems,Jiang Chunlin focused on the sufferings of the lower class and portrayed the war situation in Xianfeng’s Reign(1850—1861) by following the tradition of Bao Zhao’s Wucheng Fu 芜城赋(literally a poetic exposition onthe remains of old cities) . He describes the sadness of soldiers as“ extreme grief” and characterizes the feelingof desolation in the army in resonance with the sorrow stimulated by autumn as a time of withering in the poetictradition. He sighs at his being ignored by the government and living an unsettled life. His character as a poet iswell reflected in his poems, and his life experiences make his poetry continue and consolidate the artistic spiritof“ accomplishment resulting from hardships” in Chinese literature.
