Abstract:
Additional evidence has been found that Mount Taishan was also named Mount Taihangshanin ancient literary works. Because Mount Taihangsan was also called Mount Wuxingshan, the story of SunWukong’s( i.e. the Monkey King)being captured under Mount Wuxingshan in Xiyouji 西游记( i.e. Journeyto the West),which was actually based on the metaphor of comparing the condition where one was undergreat pressure to that in which he was topped by Mount Taishan, derived from the scenario that Sun Wukongwas topped by Mount Taishan in Erlang baojuan 二郎宝卷. In the Tang Dynasty,Mount Huashan was oncere-named Taishan, hence the co-reference of the names of mountains Taishan,Taihangshan and Huashan.Another cause for such co-reference is that Mount Taishan became a taboo title in some dynasties. Therefore,in the literary works the evil things tended to be imputed to Mount Taihangshan and good stories attributed toMount Taishan.
