- Abstract:
- With the advent of mobile phone photography technology, photography is integrated with photobrowsing, editing and self-display, thus making photos an important means of social interaction. This paperpoints out that in Chinese society,“ face” is not only a social norm embedded in interpersonal interaction, but also an evaluation mechanism and reward and punishment mechanisms for a person. The combination ofdigital photography technology and smart phones extends the form and function of the“ face” in digitization, mobility and visualization. Attaching importance to“ face” makes Chinese people lay emphasis on thesefactors when they are taking pictures: rebuilding the situations for practical purposes, posing and playing forpictures, accumulating one’s guanxi-based social capital and seeking one’s aesthetic taste in the interactionwith others. Finally, this paper argues that the complexity of social networking situations and the emergenceof mobile viewing may promote the transformation of the heterogeneity in“ faces” into a homogeneity in“ faces”, thus forming a new norm of social interaction.
