The Biography of Yingying and The Biography of Huo Xiaoyu are both excellent works of chuanqi(传奇, tales of the marvelous)in the Mid-Tang Period. They are two rare books about public opinion in the city. It is the involvement of public opinion that shaped the development of these two tales. The responses to these two love stories that stirred great sensations in Mid-Tang’s capital of Chang’an could be classified as acceptance and subversion, reflecting people’s values in pursuing love at that time. Through observing people’s attitude to these tales, we can examine the complicated social mentality about love and morality in the Mid-Tang Period.
