Title:: The Yangtze River and the Grand Canal: The Coordinates of Su Shi's Life

摘要:: 长江是横穿东西的中华民族母亲河,大运河是隋唐以来纵贯南北的交通大动脉。苏轼的一生,以长江为横线,连接眉山、黄州、江州、金陵、润州、常州等地,构成了抒发人生感怀、政治体悟、佛禅哲理等诸多情思的脉络; 以运河为纵线,连接徐州、扬州、湖州、杭州等为宦之地,彰显出勤于政事、关心民瘼的事业轨迹。而其终老常州,恰恰回答了“乡归何处”的人生命题。

Abstract:: The Yangtze River, the mother river of China, flows from east to west, while the Grand Canal, since the Sui and Tang dynasties, has served as a major north-south transportation artery. In Su Shi's life, the Yangtze River formed a horizontal axis, linking places like Meishan, Huangzhou, Jiangzhou, Jinling, Runzhou, and Changzhou, and serving as a thread through which he expressed his emotions, political insights, and reflections on Buddhist and Zen philosophy. The Grand Canal formed a vertical axis, connecting Xuzhou, Yangzhou, Huzhou, Hangzhou, and other places where he served as an official, highlighting his dedication to governance and concern for the well-being of the people. Su Shi's final years in Changzhou answered the question concerning the meaning of our life: “Where is our hometown?”
